Mister Foe

I Would Walk A Mile To See It Again
Ron Smith

Peeping Tom

This movie is about a dysfunctional young man from a well to do family named “Hallam” played flawlessly by Jamie Bell.  He becomes a recluse at the age of 17 after his mother dies, and lives in a tree house on the estate that his father owns. He is a peeping tom, watching his sister have sex and his parents kissing.  He is sure his father’s secretary, who is now his stepmother, is the one who killed her.

Obsession

He loved his mother to the point of obsession often dressing up in her clothes, and using makeup as he thinks of her. Things aren’t going well for him at home and he decides to leave and go out into the world. He settles into his new life and job at a posh restaurant getting a job after following a woman who also works there. The woman, Kate Breck, played by the beautiful Sophia Myles just happens to look like his mother. She feels sorry for him and is instrumental in getting him the job. They form a friendship. However, he stalks her and spies on her and her married lover from the skylight above her apartment high above the city. When she finds out about his spying, it sends the story in a whole new direction.

Perfect Acting

I really liked this film. The acting is perfect.  You really feel for Hallam and even though you wouldn’t want him dating your daughter, sister or, God forgive, your mother, he is likeable.

The film has a very real human side to it and it is satisfying to watch. I wish I could write something as good.  I would walk a mile to see it again.

Synopsis

Jamie Bell is Hallam Foe, a troubled young man whose knack for voyeurism paradoxically reveals his darkest fears, and his most peculiar desires. Driven to expose the true cause of his mother’s death, he instead finds himself searching the rooftops of the city of Edinburgh for love.

Featuring a lively soundtrack with Franz Ferdinand, Sons and Daughters and Orange Juice among others, Mister Foe is a darkly twisted, entertaining work of magical realism from one of the leading lights of the new Scottish cinema.
