Nim's Island

Kids Will Love It

Nilda Andrews

Okay, parents, grandparents and any other adults who want to impress their little charges. Take them to see 'Nim’s Island,' an adaptation of Wendy Orr’s children’s book.

Escapades

It stars Abigail Breslin, the 11 year-old Academy Award-nominated actress for 'Little Miss Sunshine.' The movie tells the story of Nim (Breslin) who lives on an island with her father, a marine biologist (Gerard Butler). You’d think she would be lonely with no other inhabitants on this deserted oasis, but she is a very precocious little girl with a sea lion, a pelican, and a dragon lizard as her animal friends.

To further entertain herself, she delves into the escapades of a storybook figure named Alex Rover, an Indiana Jones type character. These stories fuel her imagination of what it might be like to be in one of his books.

When Nim’s father goes missing at sea, she emails the author of the Rover series to seek help. Unbeknownst to Nim, the author of the adventure stories is a woman (Jodie Foster), who suffers from agoraphobia—the fear of public places.

The real story then begins to see if Foster’s character will leave the comforts of her San Francisco apartment to rescue Nim, will Nim’s father survive the storm at sea, and while waiting for either of these two events to occur, how does Nim manage the impending take over of the island by a greedy cruise line?

Great Entertainment

This is an entertaining movie to take your little kids or grandkids to, especially if they have read the original book, or even if they haven’t. It has very funny moments that children can relate too, especially in the interactions with the animals. It also is very imaginative in that the Rover character comes to life in many of the sequences.
