All Out Laughs
By Angela Da Costa
If you want to laugh your butt off with something completely tasteless and juvenile, you have to see this movie! I might say the film could be considered somewhere in between American Pie and The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Very, Very Funny
When I saw the film it was so very, very funny, that sadly enough to say, I could not stop myself from laughing. I think you will love the references, the sarcasm, and the blatantly obvious clues of the older brother’s sexual fixations.
In a strange way, it reminded me of my childhood. If anyone remembers the 70’s, there is a touch or a feel of the 70’s, but not too much so to be in a terrifying way. More of in a 'we used to be happy and innocent at one time kind of way.' Had we realized the references then we would probably all have blushed.
The film did make me ask myself, why do families express love in the form of hurtful pranks? They do so, in this movie, just funny in an embarrassingly sick kind of way.
I seriously could not stop myself from laughing at some of the things in the movie, even the cruel humor. If you REALLY need to laugh, this movie does the trick; it snapped me out of my strategic planning mindset. I will warn you there are lots of boobs and penis references.
For instance, there is a hilarious opening with with how young guys experience a wet dream. And, the intermingling of the new dynamics of the nuclear family and how that might play out is a very funny opening.
Notable story development twist; I was happy to see the super confident friend, to be someone who would normally be cast as or considered the underdog in most of these films. Yes, his friend is a pig and a womanizer, but not in the usual way. So, I have to give him respect for being aware of who he is and in his own twisted way having some respect for women and his friends’ feelings. They do make a mockery of Amish Rumspringa, but it is truly funny; like funny in a guilty pleasure kind of way.
So funny, I was willing to see it twice.
Synopsis
Loveable underdog Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is the last American virgin. At least that’s how it feels to him now that he’s 18, about to go to college and losing girls to his 14-year-old brother. Ians always been the nice guy, the best friend … never the boyfriend. But his luck finally seems to be changing when he meets Danielle. She’s everything he’s ever wanted in a girlfriend – fun, sexy, and she really likes him. There’s just one problem. She lives in Knoxville . And he lives in Chicago. And she thinks he’s the Brad Pitt look-alike he’s pretending to be on Facebook. At the urging of his best friend, Lance (Clark Duke), Ian decides to confront his fear of rejection when Danielle makes him the offer of a lifetime; 'If you drive all the way for me, I’ll go all the way for you.'
In the spirit of such classics as American Pie, The Sure Thing and Superbad, this wild romp follows Ian, Lance and their third musketeer, the spunky and gorgeous tomboy, Felicia (Amanda Crew), as they set out in Ian’s older brother’s beloved ’69 GTO. Despite many hilarious setbacks on the road, including a stop-off at an Amish rave (who knew the Amish could party?), Ian finally meets his dream girl … but things don’t turn out quite as planned. Along the way, Ian discovers that while he’s prepared to go the distance for sex, there might be something even better a little closer to home.
